WILD FABRICATIONS Artists

Please join me in congratulating four New Mexico Artists for their inclusion in the SAQA exhibition Wild Fabrications. Pieces from Holly Altman, Nora Bebee, Jennifer Day and Judith Roderick were selected by juror Geoffrey Gorman. Wild Fabrications will celebrate a world of animals both real and fantastical.  Contributing artists were asked to let their imaginations run wild, push their limits and create interesting and unusual interpretations of animals using unexpected or unconventional materials and embellishment. It will be very exciting to see their interpretation of the theme. Wild fabrications will premiere at the International Quilt Festival in Houston October 2015.

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER FROM MICHELLE

SAQA New Mexico Newsletter
The "NEW" newsletter!
We spoke about finding a better way to communicate at our last meeting. This is the mailing list provider I have used before. I just renued and added all your names. For very little money a whole $3.75 a month, I can send 500 emails per month. If I had paid $5.00 a month, I could even see if and when each of you open it.
I hope this will be a good solution. I'll have to add new members once I get them though SAQA. If you know of someone who is a member and not getting this new email, please let me know. I suspect that these "will" go to your spam files, just because it is sent in bulk. Mark it "not spam" so you won't miss any important SAQA NM news.
Our Last Meeting at Jennifer's
Thank you again, Jennifer for hosting 50 of us at the January 24th meeting. Yes, I said 50! I had to recount several times. That is way beyond our last record of 33. We had 8 new members and 8 prospective members at the meeting. It is a very exciting time to be a SAQA member in New Mexico. Continue reading to see just why! There are some fun opportunities ahead.
Our Next Meeting
Our next potluck meeting will be at the Ambassadors for Christ Community Church, 1540 Juan Tabo Blvd. NE in Albuquerque on Saturday, March 14th. (on the east side of Juan Tabo between Indian School and Constitution) As always, bring show and tell. We love seeing what you are working on! I will send out a reminder shortly before the meeting.
SAQA NM Blog
Thank you Donna Dixon for the wonderful job you have done with the SAQA NM blog over the past 3 years. You started with nothing and today we have a beautiful blog letting everyone know about SAQA and art quilt related items in NM.
Donna is stepping aside and Sue Szajer will be taking over the job of blog mistress/person...(Sorry,what do you call it?) Thank you Sue for volunteering. Please see a note from Sue at the end of this section.
I try to use the news letter to let you know only SAQA related items, but the blog is a place to find and post all things art quilt related, such as quilt guild shows, special art and fabric sales, classes you may be teaching, etc. Please remember when sending items for the blog that the general public (anybody and everybody) can veiw this. Don't give out any personal information. We want you to be safe. saqanm.blogspot.com
From Sue:
I am hoping that you will contact me with any news that you, as a NM regional SAQA member, wish to share.  Are you teaching a class, having a solo show, or did you see a wonderful quilt exhibit somewhere in New Mexico that others might enjoy?  If so, send me an email, including a few pictures and the pertinent information on the event.  I will be happy to post it.
I also want to revive the "Artist of the Month" as an "Artist Spotlight".  I will write the first one, but I call on you to submit your name if you would like to be featured.  Please send me, by email, a photo of your work, an artist's statement and your contact information.  I will get back to you with a few more questions.
Contact me at: saqanewmexico@gmail.com
Hoping to hear from you,
Sue Szajer

You should have received information on your acceptance. If you have questions please contact me. Please see the attachments for the Curltural Red postcards. The actual postcards will be ready by the time you receive this newsletter. Please contact Betty if you need some to distribute. Fbusby3@comcast.net

We decided at out last meeting to have a series of mini workshops possibly on April 18, Saturday morning after the opening of Cultural Red. If availible, we could meet at the Folk Art Museum.
The workshops would be: How to write an artist statement and bio, How to take a good photo of your quilt and crop/edit/size using Photoshop, and finding your voice. I thought these would each last about 30 minutes, so that the total would not exceed a couple of hours. If anyone has an idea for a fouth let me know. If you would like to lead one of these let me know. It would be nice to have a teaching team of two or three for each, so get together with a friend to lead one of these. I have materials/handouts that you can use. Many of you are experts in these areas so why not share your knowledge to encourage and help others. With only 30 minutes these aren't ment to be college courses, but nice tidbits of wisdom and experience to lead others in the right direction.
We could also plan having dinner together on Friday night after the reception/opening. I would need someone from Santa Fe to plan this. Please let me know if you would like to help.
Everyone would be on their own in finding a hotel if you wanted to stay in Santa Fe Friday night. If possible we will try and make the Saturday workshops start at 10:00 incase you are coming from Albuquerque.
Please contact me with comments, criticism, anything I might be missing? Also just let me know if your interested in the workshops and would be willing to stay Saturday for them. We could also do these at another time if need be. Let me know what you think.

NEW INFORMATION ON THE BLOG

There are a few changes to the SAQA New Mexico blog.  There are new tabs below the header:  IMPORTANT DATES and CALL FOR ENTRY:  SEEDS BY SAQA.

IMPORTANT DATES list the next meeting date and location, in this case March 14 in Albuquerque.  Following will be relevant dates for our shows...openings, closings, deliveries, deadlines for submission.  Use this page as a quick reference guide to keep your calendar up to date.

CALL FOR ENTRY pages contain the prospectus and entry form for each show.  When the submission deadline has passed, the general show information will remain available in one place, but the heading will note the application is closed.

I hope these pages will encourage our members to use this blog as a source for "what" and "when" things are happening in this region.

If you have news to share, please contact me, Sue Szajer, at saqanewmexico at gmail dot com.
