Highlights from the January 19, 2019 meeting in Santa Fe

Here are highlights from the January 19, 2019 meeting at the Eldorado Library in Santa Fe.

Exhibition News
***LARG
LARG is now hanging at the Roswell Art Museum.  The show will be up until January 26, 2019. The Roswell Art Museum is located at 1011 N Richardson Ave.  575-624-6744.
Plans are in the works for LARG to hang in Farmington in late August.

***OUT OF THE BLUE
This is the theme for the next Capitol Rotunda show in 2019.  Complete information can be found at SAQANM.blogspot.com or at SAQA.  Or at the end of this e-mail is a document entitled Out of the Blue Call for Entry.  It has all information about requirements and how to enter the show.
You can enter up to 3 wall pieces and 2 3-D pieces.  There is no charge to enter pieces initially.  IF you have a piece that is chosen, then there is a $35 fee to SAQA.
There will be a catalog produced for this show so good photos are IMPERATIVE!!  At the November 17 meeting at HipStitch, Betty set up lights and a backdrop and took photos for people who brought their entries.  Again, at the end of this post is a segment entitled From the Exhibition Committee.  This is a recap of information Betty talked about for taking good photos and has links and helpful resources for good photography.
The opening reception for Out Of The Blue has been moved to May 10, from 4 – 6 PM.

FIBER ARTS FIESTA
Important dates to put on your calendar now:  Set up May 29, 2019.  Show runs May 30, 31 and June 1.  Please check out www.fiberartsfiesta.org to see categories and entry deadlines.
Also at that website you can access the schedule for having your quilt(s) photographed for your entry.  The next date for photography is the afternoon of February 22.
A big THANK YOU!! To Beverly Tones and Char Punke for volunteering to serve on the Education Committee at Fiber Arts.  This is a big job and we’re thankful to them for volunteering their time.
We will also need to provide small “doo-dahs” for the Fiesta as we have done in the past.  Several ideas were discussed and you are all encouraged to begin making at least 2 – 5 small things (need fit into a Ziploc sandwich bag) to donate.  Ideas included greeting cards, cup sleeves and fiber beads.
Suzanne, at HipStitch, has graciously invited up to use the classroom after the March 16 meeting for working on doo-dahs.  More information to come.

From Mary Jo:
Call for Volunteers for Fiber Arts Fiesta 2019

As an affiliated member of the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, SAQA is actively involved in Fiesta 2019, May 30 & 31 and June 1 at the Expo Center in ABQ. Life Along Rio Grande will be the featured exhibit; Betty Busby is the featured artist; and SAQA will have a booth. We will be asking for many volunteers to help in those areas during the show, including on set-up day,
May 29. A list with volunteer opportunities, times, etc., will be available at the March meeting.
But we have an urgent need for at least three volunteers to join the Fiesta Quilt Committee right now.

As one of the quilting members of Fiber Arts Fiesta, SAQA participates in developing, jurying, judging and hanging of the approximately 200 quilts that will be on display during Fiesta. The Quilt Committee is already at work. SAQA Quilt Committee members will need to attend a few meetings in ABQ prior to Fiesta to help with planning and to be actively involved in all aspects of setting up the quilt display. In addition, we will need other SAQA members to help with the set-up of the quilt display and the SAQA booth.

To volunteer for the Fiesta Quilt Committee, please contact Mary Jo Stipe.

AUCTION SQUARES
These are the 12” x 12” squares that are auctioned off on-line.  All the money raised through the sale of these small quilts goes toward funding traveling exhibitions and NM SAQA has had its share of those.  This is a good chance to spend a small amount of time and help out in a big way.  Pat Gould is collecting these this year.  You can contact her directly or bring them to our meeting in March.  The final deadline to turn in your auction square is June 1.

LOTS OF GREAT MISCELLANEOUS STUFF!!!

If you are active on FaceBook here are a couple of sites to check out:
TheMourningProject.com a fiber arts project spearheaded by Mary Vaneecke from the Tucson region.  She is hoping to raise awareness of infant mortality in the US.

Join SAQA members only page.  Just put that in the search bar of FB and if your membership is current you can be added to this all SAQA group.

The 2019 SAQA conference in San Jose is full, so if you hoped to go and haven’t registered you’re out of luck.  BUT you can make plans now (and start saving your $$) for the 2020 conference, March 19-22 in Toronto.  Should be a great time!

ArtQuilt Santa Fe is also full.  If you had hoped to work with Betty Busby at this year’s retreat but didn’t get registered, you can contact Ann Anastasio or Gale Oppenheim-Pietrzak to be put on a waiting list in case there are cancellations.

Ann Ferkovich is teaching her “Ferkovich It” at Santa Fe Quilting February 17 & March 10.

Carolyn just returned from a great trip to Morocco with a company called Craft Tours.  She highly recommended them.

Congratulations to Kay Sutt who had a piece accepted into the reader’s challenge “Heat it Up” in Quilting Arts.  Look for it in the June/July issue.

Cynthia is taking a class at SF Community College entitled Art Jump Start.  It begins March 31 and she hopes some SAQA members will join her.  www.sfcc.edu

Our next meeting is March 16 2019 at HipStitch in Albuquerque.

We had a photo session during the meeting, and saw some amazing entries for Out of the Blue. Below are some basic photography tips that we discussed, as well as links to products and additional online tutorials.
Image Basics for Show Entry
  1. Using small pins that do not show, attach your quilt to a vertical, plain backdrop. Avoid hanging from a quilt stand.
  2. Use photo lights- link below
  3. Use a tripod!
  4. Use the timer on your camera
  5. Zoom in a little bit to avoid edge distortion
  6. Set your camera for maximum file size
  7. Always enter the biggest file you have unless there are upper limits set on the entry form

There seems to have been bit of misunderstanding about the insurance notice for Out of the Blue - it is NOT necessary to have an appraisal of your work to enter the show. In the (very unlikely) event that you would need to make a claim, you would have to provide proof of value. This is true of ANY insurance.
