Latest News on Life Along the Rio Grande

Here’s an update from Betty Busby regarding Life Along the Rio Grande.  After a successful run at the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta the show keeps on traveling. It’s pretty impressive and inspiring.

Life Along the Rio Grande was installed, in its entirety, at the Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos, where it will be on display until the end of July.

Selected works from the show will then go to the Farmington Museum of Art beginning August 31, 2019 through January 4, 2020. The list of selected works can be found in the March Meeting recap post below.

The entire exhibit has been invited to exhibit at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Festival in Pennsylvania in September 2020.

Thanks to all who are in the show, it looks amazing at the library- go see it if you can. Images of the installation are online at this link- https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b7yx85y44hjnli1/AACkRx6QgtS01hYym4iXD12-a?dl=0

Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta - a great success!

Our Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta exhibits were a great success!

Life Along the Rio Grande received extremely favorable feedback, and the SAQA booth got lots of interest.  Betty Busbyhad many fabulous quilts on display and demo-ed and talked with many visitors.

Thanks to all who volunteered and made it all work.

Here’s a video tour of the show at this link, if you were unable to make it to the event-

Exhibition News
***LARG
LARG continues to be a great show.  Next exhibition venue is Fiber Arts Fiesta from May 30 to June 1.  From July 1 – 31 the show will hang at the library in Los Alamos.  Then it will be at the Museum of Art in Farmington, NM from August 31, 2019 to January 1, 2020:

There won’t be room for all 35 quilts to hang there. You will find the list of quilts that will hang in Farmington from August 31, 2019 to January 1, 2020 in the post below in the March Meeting recap.

***OUT OF THE BLUE
Blue opened on Friday, May 10 and looks great.  We had a nice turn out, great food (thanks Gale O-P), music (thanks John Rogers) and lots of happy people.  The show will be up through August 9 and then travel to Farmington in April 2020.  Checking the Capitol website it shows that the Rotunda is open on Saturdays during the summer, so if you have visitors and want them to see the show, you can visit on Saturdays.

FIBER ARTS FIESTA
Lots of last minute info for Fiesta.  Thanks to everyone who has volunteered.  We still will take any help you are able to give, especially on Hanging Day, (Wednesday, May 29).  You don’t have to be a member of SAQA or any other group to volunteer and those volunteers get in free.  So, if you have friends or relatives visiting who would like to see the show and do some shopping, just sign them up for a short volunteer shift (contact Mary Jo) and they will get in free.  But your name does need to be on the volunteer list where it is checked off by other Fiesta volunteers, so plan ahead.  We have gotten plenty of beautiful doo-dahs.  Thanks to all who contributed.  We also got some nice quilts turned in at the meeting that we will use in the SAQA booth.  If you didn’t turn anything in, you may still do so, just be sure each quilt has a slat with holes drilled in each end.  No wire is necessary.  Contact Mary Jo if you are going to be bringing her a quilt, or if you are planning to bring one on Wednesday during set up.  She’s keeping a master list.

AUCTION SQUARES
These are the 12” x 12” squares that are auctioned off on-line.  All the money raised through the sale of these small quilts goes toward funding traveling exhibitions.  This is a good chance to spend a small amount of time and help out in a big way.  Pat Gould is collecting these this year.  The final deadline to turn in your auction square is June 1.  Also, consider watching the SAQA website beginning September 13.  You might want to bid on a small quilt.  All proceeds from this auction help fund the globally traveling shows.

SAQA Conference
MaryJo gave a brief recap of this year’s conference which was held in San Jose.  She had a great time and encouraged all of us to think about attending next year.  It will be held in Toronto, Canada, March 19 – 22.  The conference and hotel rooms often sell out, so if you think you might want to attend, sign up early.

Ideas for future NM meetings
We talked briefly about programs we might present.  Ideas included:  getting more from your SAQA membership, becoming a JAM, tapping into teachers who are coming to NM, developing a weekend retreat or a one-day mini-conference.

As usual we had a wonderful show and tell.  Thanks to everyone for getting to the meeting.  And if you weren’t there, we missed you!

Our next meeting is July 20, 2019 at HipStitch in Albuquerque.

A catalog for Blue is available at Amazon.com.  Betty is willing to do a bulk order of these.  If you want one, please contact her.  Gale is organizing food for the reception.  If you can bring something to share, let Gale know. FIBER ARTS FIESTA
From Mary Jo:
A big thank you to everyone who brought Doo-Dahs to the March meeting and also to those who signed up to volunteer at Fiesta. Please note, however, that we do not have another bi-monthly meeting until May 18, a day after the last Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta (AFAF) meeting before the big event.
So far, we have received 30 items. It’s a great start toward our SAQA NM goal of 150 items. Needless to say, keep making Doo-Dahs! We still 120 more to go. Once you have Doo-Dahs finished, if you live in the Santa Fe area, please contact Mary Jo Stipe, to arrange to drop them off or have them picked up. In Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, Mary Jo will be taking Doo-Dahs to the next Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta meetings in ABQ on April 19 and on May 17. We are still in serious need of volunteers for various duties at Fiesta including manning the SAQA booth, Betty Busby’s featured artist exhibition, the LARG art quilt show, and as white glovers in the quilting division show. Volunteers have free admission on the day you volunteer and are entered in drawings for door prizes provided by the many vendors. Again, please contact Mary Jo Stipe to sign up for specific dates, times, and locations. We love having our core SAQA NM members who invariably come through. It would be great to have the majority of our members participate. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of AFAF. It’s a fun-filled event with fascinating exhibits, tempting vendors, and the camaraderie of hundreds of fiber arts enthusiasts.
We discussed the requested video that the education committee is putting together to showcase each organization within Fiber Arts.  Pat Gould volunteered to find out about the short video that SAQA makes available for promotional information.
The Fiber Art Spring Show is scheduled for April 3 & 4, 2020.

AUCTION SQUARES
These are the 12” x 12” squares that are auctioned off on-line.  All the money raised through the sale of these small quilts goes toward funding traveling exhibitions and NM SAQA has had its share of those.  This is a good chance to spend a small amount of time and help out in a big way.  Pat Gould is collecting these this year.  You can contact her or bring them to our meeting in March.  The final deadline to turn in your auction square is June 1.

LOTS OF GREAT MISCELLANEOUS STUFF!!!

*Schatzi Brimer, our Blog mistress, would like to hear from you.  Do you read the Blog?  What do you find helpful?  What would you like changed, or included?  How can she make this better for all our members?  This is a big job and we really appreciate Schatzi’s efforts.  Give her some feedback.
*Judith Roderick invites us all to check out her show and the work of other artists at Wild Hearts Gallery in in the Homestead Shopping Center in Placitas.
*Also in Placitas, check out http://placitaslibrary.com/library-activities/art-exhibits/artist-exhibit-submission-form/  for exhibition opportunities.  Thanks to Cheryl FitzGerald for this info.

Our next meeting is May 18, 2019 at the Eldorado Library in Santa Fe.
