Here’s a brief recap of our SAQA meeting last Saturday, November 18th

Life Along the Rio Grande

•  First a big thank you to Vicki Conley for her wonderful idea and efforts to make this happen.
• Also thanks to Vicki and Betty for securing some great venues for this show.
• Betty has the original 35 entries for now.  But if you haven’t submitted something you can still do that.  As pieces sell they will be replaced with new work from other members.
• The exhibition schedule for LARG:
  • Opening at the Branigan Art Center, Las Cruces on Friday, April 6, 2018.  Reception from 5 – 8.  Runs through May 6.
  • June 23 – August 4 will hang at Unitarian Church, Albuquerque.  A Mercado is associated with this opening and members may sell items.
  • October 1 - November 19 – Macey Center, NM Tech Socorro
  • December ? – January ? – Roswell Art Museum
• There will be a catalog of this show available through Amazon.
• The Branigan Cultural Center is planning to do an instructional program with Life Along the Rio Grande when it opens there next year.
• We would like to request that you send in a small piece of material or quilted sample using techniques that are in your show quilt.
• They should be small enough to fit into a regular ring binder- that is, 81/2x11"
• This is completely optional but will go a long way in helping to educate the public about art quilts.
• The members of the local guild, Las Colcheras, have volunteered to make the presentations to museum attendees.
• Sample pieces can be sent in with your quilts or delivered to the next NM SAQA meeting.thank you!

Seeds for SAQA

•  Back by popular demand!  Opening the same weekend as LARG at the Farm and Ranch Museum in Las Cruces.  Reception held earlier in the day from 3 – 5.

Earth, Wind and Fiber

•  The spring show of the Fiber Arts Fiesta will be April 7 & 8.  Entry is free to SAQA members.  Check the website for size restrictions.

Capitol Rotunda – 2019

•  Betty is putting out a call for Theme ideas.  Should be fairly broad and able to be interpreted in many different ways.

Many thanks for MaryJo Stipe for volunteering to be our SAQA rep to the Fiber Arts Council for Fiber Arts Fiesta.  We could still use a 2nd person as a backup in case MaryJo is unable to attend a meeting.  Contact Lynn or Gale.

Meeting Recap - Sept. 16, 2017 SAQA New Mexico

In an effort to improve communication throughout our SAQA NM region, I’m planning to send a re-cap of meetings. That way if you weren’t able to attend, you will have some idea of what went on.

Here are highlights from our 9-16-17 meeting:

• We are in need of 2 people to represent SAQA at the Fiber Art Fiesta meetings. Thanks to Rod Daniel for doing this the last 2 years, but now he needs to bow out. If interested contact Gale  or Lynn
• Kathryn Lazier in our representative to Fiber Arts Education committee. A spring show is planned for April 7 & 8, 2018 titled Earth Wind and Fiber. Look for exhibit info on the blog.

Exhibition News

• Structural Diversity: Made in New Mexico ended its run at the Capitol Rotunda Gallery in Santa Fe in August. 20 pieces from the show will appear at IQF in Houston as a special exhibit.
• Natural Healing is coming back to NM the end of September after a great run, being shown at National Institutes of Health, University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.
• Life Along the Rio Grande: The entry form and instructions for this upcoming show will be sent in a separate group email in October. Detailed information on the call for entry can be found on the SAQA website here- http://www.saqa.com/calendar-detail.php?ID=5480. Hope you are all working on entries as Vicki Conley has lined up some fabulous venues for it. The opening for this show will be April 6, 2018 in Las Cruces at the Branigan Art Center. That same night, also in Las Cruces, Seeds for SAQA will have its opening reception at the Farm and Ranch Museum. Sounds like a fun weekend to be down south.
• Under the Western Sun, a dual exhibit with SAQA Colorado/Ut/Wy, is on its way to a third venue in Utah after being on display at the Macey Center in Socorro. INVITATION TO AN EXHIBIT AND WORKSHOP IN DURANGO, CO THIS SEPTEMBER

Dear SAQA reps in CO / UT / WY / AZ / NM,

As a SAQA member and volunteer curator for the Art Library of the Durango Arts Center, Durango, CO - I am writing for your kind assistance in promoting a workshop to be held at the DAC, Sept 9 and 10.

The two-day workshop - OPENINGS: Netting and Looping will be taught by SDA member and renowned artist Pat Hickman, in conjunction with her exhibit at the Durango Arts Center.

Her material used to create her sculptural forms, is rather unusual. Students will be using dried hog casings (normally used in sausage making), telephone cable and waxed linen to make sculptural forms.  Although this is a far stretch from the usual 'quilting' materials, I recently watched a video in which SAQA member Joy Nebo Lavrencik created a memorable piece for the SAQA show "Stories of Migration", using casing material.

In September, Surface Design Association member and renowned artist Pat Hickman will be in
Durango, Colorado  for a series of events.

Friends of the Art Library at the Durango Arts Center will host an exhibit as well as a two-day workshop entitled OPENINGS: Netting and Looping The exhibit info below contains links to the workshop.

OPENINGS: Netting and Looping with Pat Hickman
Saturday-Sunday, September 9 & 10 | 9am-5pm
$250 members / $275 Non-Member

Limited to 12 students

This workshop will encourage participants to explore visual ideas suggested through openwork textile structure, primarily that of knotted netting and knotless netting. Reserving space for air and the importance of what is “not there” will be built into conceptually based quick studies and studio projects, both 2-D and 3-D. There will be exploration with a variety of materials, including gut (hog casings), Hickman’s signature material, using it as both structure and skin in netting. Other materials include colored wire and waxed linen thread. The workshop is less a “how to”, more an experience in discovery, questioning, and ongoing ways of working. No previous knowledge of these textile structures is required, just a willingness to explore and learn.
Pat Hickman will be featured in a solo exhibit, Here, Still, in the DAC Art Library, September 8-October 28.  Join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 8 at 5pm.
