FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER FROM MICHELLE

Spring is at our door, or so it seems, giving me fresh new ideas about creating new fiber pieces. I hope you are inspired too.
Our next potluck meeting will be at 11:00 am on March 8th at the Ambassadors for Christ Community Church in Albuquerque, 1540 Juan Tabo Blvd. NE (between Indian School and Constitution, on the east side of Juan Tabo). Please remember that pieces for Beyond Tradition are due that day. Please bring them to the meeting or make other arrangements with Betty or me to drop them off beforehand. Also remember that slats must be provided with your piece. Please mark all slats and packing materials with your name or you will likely not have them returned to you.
For those of you with pieces in Beyond Tradition, please also include a small sample piece of work such as a test sample of dyed fabric, a small quilted or beaded sample; anything that shows some technique and can be put into a 3 ring binder that will be put on display at the show to be looked at and touched.  The sample does not have to be a technique that you used in your piece for the show.
We are fortunate here in New Mexico to have a network of talented people who are eager to share their talents and time so that we can all prosper. Our SAQA/NM Exhibition Committee is happy to announce a new show for 2015:
Cultural Red
Where? At the Capitol Rotunda Gallery in Santa Fe
When? April-August 2015
Who? Entry is limited to New Mexico residents only.
Tentative calendar:
Call for entry released: March 8, 2014

More information on Cultural Red will be released on March 8th.
We are making plans for our April 4-5, 2014 workshop and opening reception for Beyond Tradition in Ruidoso. Vicky is planning a dinner outing on the evening of Friday, April 4th (spouses and friends are welcome), a fabric painting workshop and dyeing demo is planned for Saturday morning at 10-to lunch am on April 5th at Vicki Conley's Pottery Studio and the opening reception for Beyond Tradition will be Saturday afternoon at 2 pm at the Hubbard Museum. Some of our local SAQA money will cover catering costs for the reception. It should be a wonderful weekend! I hope you can attend.
The Workshop/demo is free! All you need to bring is a pair of latex gloves and painting clothes. You will be able to watch several techniques using Color Hue dyes by Betty and Holly and make a small sample piece to take home.
If you wish to purchase additional materials to create on your own, dyes and silk are available from Dharma Trading. The starter set is here:http://www.dharmatrading.com/kits/starter/sets/colorhue-silk-dyes-6-color-set.html
The product number is #CH6. You will also need 6 2oz. squeeze bottles to mix in the dye. Betty will also have a few silk scarf blanks for sale in case you fall in love with these dyes and you will!
Vicki needs a count of how many will be attending the dinner Friday night and how many will attend the workshop demo Saturday morning ASAP. Please either respond to this email or let Vicki know if and what you will be attending so that she can make the appropriate arrangements. vickiconley55@gmail.com. I’ll pass whatever information I get on to Vicki. I will send out the address of the dinner place as soon as we know.
Thank you to Carol Caruso for all the trouble she went through in trying to reserve a block of rooms for us in Ruidoso. In the end we decided the small savings to each of you did not outweigh the risk she would have to take if we didn’t fill the minimum number of rooms. The following are several hotels and contact information for you to make your own arrangements. Based on the response we have for this workshop we may feel a little more confident making a commitment to a block of rooms for future SAQA NM events/openings/workshops. Thank you for understanding.
