THE SILVER CITY FIBER ARTS FESTIVAL AND NOVEMBER'S SAQA MEETING

The 2013 Silver City Fiber Arts Festival appeared to be a great success in part to the tireless work of our own SAQA member Lynn Welsch who chaired the committee that made it happen.  The Festival was hosted by the Southwest Women's Fiber Arts Collective(SWAFC) and there were great exhibits representing the arts of the SWFAC.  Among other exhibits was the SAQA New Mexico exhibit, "A Color Runs Through It" with 40 members from our area participating.

Denise Seavey contributed these comments about the show:  "What a fun and successful show this past weekend in Silver City.  “A Color Runs Through It” was a challenge for SAQA NM.  The possibilities were endless in creating black and white quilts with one color as represented by the 50 quilts in the show."

The Silver City contingency that were a big part of making the show a success!
The Friday night of the show there were many members in attendance for the November SAQA meeting.  It was held at the Adobe Springs Cafe in Silver City.  Other than overwhelming the restaurant with our numbers, there were 22 of us in attendance with three or four husbands included,  we had a great time sharing, socializing and eating.  Michelle will follow-up with her newsletter about the business of the meeting but in the meantime, here are some pictures.

Thanks Gale Oppenheim for pointing our way to Silver City
and making the arrangements at the restaurant for the meeting!

THANK YOU PAT GOULD FOR THIS WONDERFUL ENTRY ABOUT THE 2013 IQF HOUSTON SHOW!

I've attended every Houston show since 1993 with the exception of 2007 when we did our Nile trip in November. New Mexico was well represented at the IQF Houston show this year as always, both in having works exhibited and attending the fun-filled festival. As best I can recall, these NM members attended and I apologize if I omitted anyone but I must not have run into you among the 62,000 other attendees.
Pat Gould, Betty Busby, Julie Filatoff, Holly Altman, Cheryl Fitzgerald, Judith Roderick, Lynn Welsch, Vicki Conley, Shannon Conley, Martha Wolfe, Donna Dixon, Marianne Williamson, Lorraine Hollingsworth, Jennifer Day, Betty Hahn, Katie Pasquini-Masopust, and Gay Young.

As always, the exhibits were stunning and we all had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The major SAQA exhibits drew large crowds and our Walk in the Wild exhibit was also a big hit and got a lot of attention. It is always nice when people are discussing your piece or the show and you can jump in and discuss more in depth about your work or how the show came about.

One very fortuitous introduction was when Betty met Amy Milne, Executive Director of the Quilt Alliance on Friday afternoon. Amy and Betty arranged that Amy would film 3 minute interviews with artists whose work was in Walk in the Wild on Saturday morning as part of their mission to document quilts and the stories behind the quilts or their creators. Unfortunately, not all the artists from our show could be interviewed as they had to catch their flights home but I think we had about 8 of us who were interviewed and filmed by Amy. It was a very nice experience and it was lovely chatting with her.

About a week or so before the festival, some of us arranged to rent a car on Thursday and drive to the Texas Quilt Museum to see our "Unfolding" show. The drive there was edgy as there was a torrential rain, making it difficult to even read the highway signs, but Betty got us there safe and sound. Once there, the storm blew over and the sun came out for a lovely day. We arrived at the TQM in La Grange at about 10:30 and were immediately met at the door by Lucy Carr, currently managing curator, and Jim Ayer who is the historian/librarian of the collection, as well as several local quilters who volunteer as docents. The following is from the TQM website "The Texas Quilt Museum is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity,  It is housed in two historic 1890s buildings, which provide a fine showcase for both antique and contemporary quilt art with their high ceilings, brick walls, and original hardwood floors. " http://www.texasquiltmuseum.org/index.htmlOur show, as it was hung at the TQM was entitled, "Land of Enchantment: Art Quilts from New Mexico". We had the entire back gallery for this exhibit and it was beautifully displayed. We spent a few hours there talking about our work to the staff and visitors and getting to know Lucy and Jim a little bit. They had graciously arranged for us to have lunch at a local restaurant called Bistro 108 where we had an awesome lunch and the ambiance of the Bistro was great. La Grange reminded me of villages/towns where I grew up back east with its mostly Victorian style brick and stone buildings.

The 2013 IQF Houston was another great festival.

SILVER CITY MEETING IN NOVEMBER & A NEW EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY

Silver City is right around the corner, November 15 and 16. If you are planning to attend the SAQA diner meeting on the 15th, and have not mentioned it to either me or Gale, please email me and let me know you plan to attend. We will need to give a rough number to the restaurant. It will be great fun. I hope to see you there.
Just a note about emails from me/SAQA:
When I send a SAQA newsletter or update through the SAQA email system, the system automatically personalizes the email with your first name and assigns my email address as the return. This has confused people a bit in thinking that I have only contacted them personally and not the group as a whole. I’m sorry about the confusion and the sometimes forward nature of these emails. One way you can tell the difference is that in a SAQA group email I will sign my full name with the SAQA NM Representative title. In personal emails I will just sign Michelle. I hope this helps with the confusion.

Now that we have one exhibition entry behind us, it’s time to prepare for the next; Beyond Tradition. Please see the following from Betty. I’m sure you’re working on something perfect for this show! I can’t wait to see it!

New exhibition opportunity for SAQA/NM members!
The information for our upcoming show in Ruidoso, Beyond Tradition, is attached in Word format AND included in the body of the email below.
When submitting your entries, you may return the email to Betty Busby atfbusby3@comcast.net with your information filled in, OR, return as a document in Word or Pages.  Please DO NOT submit as PDF, JPG or hard copy.  thank you!

SAQA NEW MEXICO NEWSLETTER

Fall is my favorite time of year here in the Southwest! Love that deep orange moon that hangs sooo low in the sky near the end of October. Seeing those fabulous colors make me want to make art quilts. I hope you are inspired too. We have so many wonderful opportunities coming up for exhibits and meetings and even a workshop! Please read the newsletters from me so you don’t miss out on anything.
We had a fabulous meeting in September with 20 of us in attendance in Santa Fe. Many had their entries for the next show “A Color Runs through It”. It was obvious from what we saw that this is going to be a great show when these pieces are all hung together. Thank you Betty for all your work on these exhibition opportunities! Check out our blog for a picture of one entry whose outfit color coordinated with her entry! So fun!

For those of you who have not entered A Color Runs through It yet, there is still time. The deadline is October 15th. I will attach the entry form with this email. After entering you will need to get your quilt to me by November 1st.  Please send me an email to let me know when you would like to drop off your entry at Ambassadors for Christ Community Church or I have arranged that the entries may be dropped off at Southwest Decoratives. Please also let me know if you have left your entry at SWD so I know what to expect to collect.
Our next meeting will be in Silver City, NM to correspond with the premier opening of A Color Runs through It at the Silver City Fiber Arts Fiesta http://www.fiberartscollective.org/festival.html on November 15 and 16. The Festival was organized by a SAQA member Lynn Welsh. Thank you to Betty and Lynn for working out the details of our meeting place. They have planned a SAQA dinner meeting at the Adobe Springs Café just 2 miles from the Fiesta at 6 pm Friday night, November 15th.  1617 Silver Heights Blvd.   http://www.adobespringscafe.com
There is a Holiday Inn Express http://www.hotel-silver-city.com/  almost across the street from the conference center and Comfort Inn http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-silver_city-new_mexico-NM016  or Econo Lodge http://www.econolodgesilvercity.com/  not far. It should be great fun! I hope to see you there! For those not convinced to join us see this article in The New York Times about Silver City. The Pictures alone make me want to go! http://travel.nytimes.com/2013/09/22/travel/looking-for-big-flavors-in-a-small-new-mexico-town.html?hpw
Additional info from Betty:
There will be additional exhibition venues for A Color Runs Through It.
The guild in Las Cruces will include it in their February show, and it has also been invited to the Hubbard Museum in Ruidoso to hang alongside our major show, Beyond Tradition, which begins April 5, 2014.
If you do NOT wish to be a part of these subsequent shows must let me (Betty) know prior to the Silver City show, so that your work may be returned to you.  Any quilts sold in Silver City may also be pulled from the remaining venues if desired.
The remainder of the work that is travelling to the next venues will be stored by Vicki Conley.

Please let us know if you will not be coming to Santa Fe on Monday so that we can make sure your quilt gets to the right place.
Mark your calendars! Our next pot luck meeting will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 21 at the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe. In preparation for “Beyond Tradition”, be ready to share with the group the most unusual item you have ever used in an art quilt.

NEW MEXICO NEWSLETTER

I hope everyone had a wonderful kickoff to summer over the Memorial Day Weekend. Our last meeting was on May 18th in Santa Fe. The show and tell was inspiring as usual and the comments and stories from those who attended the conference were encouraging. I hope you all are able to attend a conference at some point. Next year it’s in Washington DC, May 1-4. Think about it!
Our next pot luck meeting will be in Albuquerque at the Ambassador for Christ Community Church at 11:00am.  I will send directions with the newsletter about one week before that meeting. For this meeting plan on bringing a photo “you” have taken that you think might be inspiration for a quilt.  Be ready to tell us why or how you are inspired.  Is there something about the subject or fantastic lighting or color? Or maybe it’s about pattern, texture or line?
A New Exhibition opportunity from our exhibition committee is explained below.  Please see the attachment/entry form for this exhibit. This should be great fun; not too big, simple challenge with fabulous possibilities!  Please consider entering this one. Note the deadline for entry is October 15.  Have fun!
Also keep in mind Beyond Tradition in Ruidoso April 2014.  Entries for that show are 24" min., 65". Max. Entries will be taken from September through January. We also discussed having the April 2014 meeting in Ruidoso for the opening of this show. We will have hotel and other information about this in the future.

ALBUQUERQUE'S BIENNIAL FIBER ARTS FIESTA

The 2013 Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta has wrapped up for another two years.  SAQA members from all over the country were well represented in the quilt show that was sponsored by the New Mexico Quilters' Association and Thimbleweeds Guilds.

Congratulations go to Nancy Steidle, winner of Best in Show and to all the many other members who won ribbons.  Following are some pictures of New Mexico SAQA member quilts and even a couple from the New England SAQA chapter.

Shannon Conley of Moore, Oklahoma had entries in AFAF and congratulations to her on receiving Best of Show at the Machine Quilters' Showcase in Kansas for her dinosaur quilt that was in our Walk in the Wild Show.  Although the tornado that tore through Moore, OK came very close to Shannon's home, they are all okay.  Let's all give our best thoughts to folks in Moore who were devastated by this storm.

Apologies go out to the creators of these wonderful pieces of art.  These photographs taken with my iphone do not do them any justice.   I also apologize for any quilts in the show created by SAQA members that I missed.

Nancy Steidle's Best of Show - the bead work is phenomenal!

Thanks to Anita McSorley for Chairing the Committee to make the show possible
and here is her blue ribbon winner!!

The following are entries from New England SAQA members!
