MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW SAQA NM REPRESENTATIVE

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday! I'm looking forward to serving for the next two years as your new New Mexico Regional SAQA Representative. Thank you Julie and Ann for your service over the past two years. You both have created very big shoes that I will never be able to fill.
January 8th is the opening of "Uncommon Threads II" at the First Unitarian Church on the SW corner of Comanche and Carlisle. A reception/mercado will be held before(9:00 - 9:30), between(10:00 - 10:30) and after their services(12:00 - 12:30). Everyone is invited and some who are exhibiting will sell small works at the mercado.
January 8th will also be the date of the the first SAQA meeting. It will be held at 1:30 pm at Ambassadors for Christ Community Church, 1540 Juan Tabo NE, Suite A in Albuquerque. The church is located on the east side of Juan Tabo between Constitution and Indian School. Since many will be attending "Uncommon Threads II" in the morning we will not have our usual pot luck. I hope you can get together with friends after the exhibit and have a bite to eat before coming the the meeting at 1:30. I will provide dessert and a beverage.
We will have a very short presentation on what SAQA is, so this is a good time to bring any friends who might be interested in SAQA but want to know more. We will have updates on the open space visitor's center show being planned for December 2012 and the SAQA conference in Santa Fe 2013. We will talk about upcomming additions Donna Dixon will be adding to the new SAQA NM blog http://saqanm.blogspot.com (Thank you Donna!) and much more. Please bring your show and tell, as we always enjoy seeing what everyone is working on.
I look forward to seeing you on the 8th.

PAT GOULD REPORTS ON LAST MONTH'S SILVER CITY FIBER ARTS FIESTA AND SAQA MEETING!

Silver City Fiber Art Festival and SAQA meeting - Friday, November 11, 2011

Betty, Holly, and I got to the Fiber Fiesta in Silver City in the
mid-afternoon on Friday. The festival was great - plenty of good vendors
and the southern members had a show of their work. Lynn
Welsch did a great job organizing the festival and the hope is to have it
be a biennial.

After the festival, we had a SAQA meeting at the Lois Duffy Art Gallery,
thanks to Susan Szajer who exhibits there. At the meeting (and subsequent
dinner) were: Susan, Donna Sebastian, Chris Ramsey (guest), Lynn Welsch,
Jean Cowie, Holly Altman, Betty Busby, and Pat Gould. (photos of gallery
and Susan's work).

Susan had crackers and cheese for us and a nice table set up to meet.
Betty talked about the upcoming shows, especially the one at the Open
Space and showed the group her "sample" fox quilt. We also talked about
the show at the Capitol in 2013 and that it will be up during
> the SAQA conference which is scheduled for the last weekend in April
2013. Susan then gave us a talk about her stunning work and how she
arrived at where she is both in terms of moving to Silver City and  her
life journey as an artist.

We then had dinner at Shavek, a popular local restaurant a few blocks from the gallery

A good time was had by all (photo of the group taken by
Jean).

LOOK FORWARD TO THIS NEW EXHIBIT!

Enchanted Threads
Featuring A Walk in the Wild
Call for Entry

An exhibition of contemporary fiber art at the  City of Albuquerque’s Open Space Visitor Center Gallery located at 6500 Coors Boulevard NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120.  The opening reception will be Saturday, November 10, 2012, from 3-5pm.  The exhibit will close Sunday, December 30, 2012.

The exhibit will consist of two distinct parts. The first is Enchanted Fibers, which will feature art quilts with a Southwest theme that will be mounted on the gallery walls.

The second part of the show, which will be held concurrently, is called A Walk in the Wild.
It will be a unique exhibit of banner-shaped fiber art that will be hung from the ceiling in the center of the gallery.  Visitors are intended to interact with these pieces by walking through them.

One application fee and one entry will cover one or both of these exhibits; you may apply for either or both.

ELIGIBILITY
All work must meet the definition of an Art Quilt: a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.

Applicants must be current members of SAQA with New Mexico as one of the regions on their membership.

In addition, only original artwork, conceived and created by the entrant(s), will be considered; no patterns, kits or copies are allowed. Works that are produced by more than one artist must have all listed as entrants .

Non-refundable entry fee is $30 for up to TWO entries for EACH part of the exhibition. Please make checks payable to SAQA, and mail them to

Images must be in sharp focus. The quilt should be photographed on a plain white background with no hanging devices, pins, tacks or other extraneous items visible and the quilt should be as straight as possible. Poor quality images will affect the jurors' decisions. If an entrant disregards the requirements, their quilt(s) may be disqualified. The committee reserves the right to refuse works that differ significantly from images submitted, are not in good condition, or are not appropriate for the exhibition/venue.

These artists combine their exceptional skills in working with fabrics, threads, and their artistic insights to craft stunning tactile creations that inspire, elevate, and encourage reflection.

TEXAS QUILT MUSEUM NEEDS SMALL ART QUILTS

Karey Bresenhan of Quilts, Inc. has been an incredible friend to SAQA.  Karey has a request:

"As a former SAQA Board member, I love art quilts and love to promote them whenever possible, especially at my International Quilt Festivals (Houston, Long Beach, Cincinnati).  I've come up with another way to introduce people to the beauty of art quilts, and I hope you will be able to help me on this.

For more than a year, I have focused almost entirely on creating the new Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, Texas (about 100 miles from Houston).  It is going to be fabulous--two 1893 handmade brick buildings containing three high ceilinged galleries with a terrific quilt mural on the exterior and a Grandmother's Flower Garden on adjacent property.  La Grange is a small Central Texas town that is almost equi-distant from Houston, Austin and San Antonio, so it is in a perfect crossroads position.  We are opening officially on Sunday, November 13, but we have private tours and events scheduled at the Museum pre-opening, beginning October 20.  The Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit institution that will focus on exhibitions, rather than collecting, due to limited space."

"We have a small Museum Store and as a former quilt shop owner, it is falling to me to stock this store.. with the most limited budget imaginable!  So I thought I would turn to SAQA artists for help.  I read all the time how quilt artists don't know what to do with all their quilts... perhaps you would consider donating one or more to the Texas Quilt Museum that we could sell in our Museum Store?"

"I'm looking for small art quilts that we can sell for between $100 and $200.  I realize that is very low for many of you, and I certainly acknowledge that they would be worth much more than that.  But that's about the outside limit of the market here.  Because we are a museum, quality is important. as you might imagine.  But although I am a dreamer, I'm not unrealistic... I know we are not likely to get top award winners donated to sell. (Then again, wouldn't that be wonderful!)  But I also know how talented and how prolific many of you are.  Today I'm hoping you also have a strong philanthropic streak and will want to help us get this new quilt museum off to an outstanding start.  By donating a small quilt or two, you will be helping us present fine quilts and spread the love and understanding of art quilts."

"If you are interested, please contact me personally at kareyb@quilts.com.  I do hope to hear from you!  You'd be doing such a good deed!"

GREAT INFORMATION FROM OUR JULY MEETING!

The following materials and resources were suggested by SAQA NM members.

Call for banners for the London Olympics: http://www.quilts4london.org.uk/

Evolon is a nonwoven microfiber material made of nylon and polyester. You can paint, dye, print and heat distress Evolon. It will not fray when cut with a scissors and can also be cut using a soldering iron. It excels as a base for stitch, by hand or machine and works well layered with sheer elements (like Lutradur) above it. This is Evolon Soft: Lighter, much like a chamois. Ideal for dyeing, stitching, drapey projects. More info: http://www.meinketoy.com/item_680/Evolon-Soft.htm
